Y5 visit the Town Hall for First News Literacy Event

I was invited by Mrs Bonnet to the Town Hall along with Maddy, James, Keenan, Eva, Ryan, Ben, Liesl and Bethany from Y5. The event was based around reporting the news and was led by a local freelance journalist who himself became interested in writing news reports while he was at school. It was attended by various schools from around the city and the children had the opportunity to work with many of them on a range of activities. These included writing headlines, sharing news stories from Charnock School and looking at news stories from different perspectives. We also took part in a quiz based on stories from First News and I have to say I was so impressed by how many answers our children knew, they certainly taught me a thing or two. Well done Eva for doing the solo round, you really stepped up and did us proud! After a picnic in the Winter Gardens, the children had prepared a news story which they had to try and bluff other schools into thinking it was false, even though ours was true. Yes, there really are fairy doors in a fairy woodland in Somerset! The purpose of this was to encourage the children to question what they are being told in order to make a decision or form an opinion about what they are reading. As a Governor it is always a privilege to be involved in the children’s learning, and I have to say this has been one of my most gratifying. To see what the children have worked so hard at in the classroom really come to life is fantastic. The way the children conducted themselves in both their behaviour and their enthusiasm to take part was exceptional and made me very proud. At the end of the day we were treated by a visit from David Harmer who is a children’s poet and author. I think the children will agree we laughed – a lot!!! James took part in a superhero story and to hear him ask for a stunt double will bring a smile to my face for years to come! Louisa Hazlehurst – Governor
